This week, on November 25, was celebrated the International
day for the Elimination of violence against women. In this blog we join the
celebration, not only paying tribute to the victims of this social scourge, but
also making mention of the origins of this celebration.
The celebration of the International day for the
Elimination of violence against women was approved by the General Assembly of
the United Nations, resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, and it is held
annually every November 25.
The date was chosen as a tribute to three political
and feminist women who were sisters from the Dominican and were killed by order
of dictator Trujillo on November 25, 1960.
Since the resolution was adopted, the UN has invited
Governments and Non-governmental organizations to take part in these activities
in order to make the society aware against this scourge that hits women,
without discrimination of race, age, society, because it occurs in all regions
of the planet to a greater or lesser extent.
